The database query presents initially a set of dropdowns and text boxes allowing you to specify the query you wish to perform. The 'columns' in the database you can search can be found by clicking the dropdowns and the value you wish to search with can be entered in the text boxes.
You can combine multiple queries (e.g. serotype 14 and Spain, returning Spanish isolates of serotype 14, or Spain or Portugal, returning isolates from both Spain and Portugal) by filling in more than one textbox / dropdown row and you can choose to order your results by any column using the 'order by' section of the form.
If you would like to see current values within the database for a particular 'column' you can use the 'Lookup' facility below the main form. Alternatively, if you start typing in the textbox you will get a dropdown list of fields that include the characters you have typed - e.g. if 'Country' is chosen, as soon as enter 'S' (or 's') in the textbox, you will get a dropdown list of all countries represented in the database starting with the letter S, and you can simply select the required country from this list.
The following screenshot shows a query of the S. pneumoniae MLST database, searching for isolates of a particular capsular serotype (serotype = 9V)
Having entered your query, 'click to Search database' will produce a results page similar to the following screenshot:
The query you have performed (in our example 'serotype=9V') is listed to the top right of the form, along with a 'Click to Reset' button that will return you to a blank form so that you can perform another query.
As with the MLST-Maps results page, a number of TABS are present below the form. These TABS display results based on your query.
The default 'Results' TAB - lists the output of the query (as in the screenshot above). Somehow we need the option to display more isolate data - e.g. notes, submitter, etc ett
Map of Results
Clicking the 'Map of Results' TAB shows you a Google Map with placemarks indicating countries where isolates that match your query (serotype 9V) have been deposited in the MLST database. Clicking any placemark opens an 'Info Window' indicating the number of isolates returned by your query from that country, as in the following screenshot:
In the next section we show the use of eBURST to view the output from your query or to compare the output from your query to that from another query.
