Database Query - eBURST

burst

eBURST is integrated within the database query allowing you to use eBURST to display the relatedness of the isolates returned by your query or, using comparative eBURST, to compare the isolates from one query to those from another query.

 

On clicking the 'eBURST' TAB following a query, you will be presented with a link that will open eBURST pre-loaded with the number of isolates of each ST returned by your query..

Below this is the option to use comparative eBURST to compare your query isolates with those from another query.

The following screenshot shows a comparative query, comparing the isolates of S. pneumoniae serotype 9V isolates (your original query) with those of serotype 14 (the comparison query).

Clicking 'Submit' will produce the eBURST launch page as in the following screenshot:

'Click here to launch eBURST' launches the program preloaded with the isolates of each ST returned from both queries and the resulting population snapshot is shown below.

The text below the eBURST logo indicates the colours used within eBURST to indicate STs from your initial query and those from your comparison query, as follows:

STs found only in your initial query are coloured BLACK


STs found both in your initial query and the comparison query are coloured PINK


STs found only in your comparison query are coloured GREEN

With our example above, STs coloured with a GREEN halo are those where all isolates are serotype 14, STs coloured with a PINK halo are STs where isolates of both serotype 14 and serotype 9V are in the database, and STs with a BLACK halo are those where all isolates are serotype 9V. The abundance of each ST is shown by the size of the circles. For clarity, the numbering of the STs has been deselected using the option in the 'Diagram' dropdown menu of the eBURST app.

HINT. The blue and yellow circles represent STs that are predicted founders and subfounders of eBURST groups and, for increased clarity, these colours can be changed to black using the 'Diagram' dropdown menu.

In the next section we show how to use a tree to view the STs from your initial query, or to compare STs from the initial query with those from another query.
