MLST-Maps - eBURST

eburst

The eBURST TAB allows you to undertake geographic eBURST comparisons, comparing isolates from a selected country with those from any other country (or set of countries).

For full details on the BURST algorithm and the use of eBURST please visit http://eburst.mlst.net

On clicking the eBURST TAB, you are presented with a list of continents (which can be expanded to view a list of countries within each continent) from where isolate data have been deposited in the MLST database. Each country where data are available has the number of isolates indicated in parentheses.

For example, the following screenshot indicates the selection of Australia and New Zealand as the countries you wish to compare with your initially selected country - Brazil

After selecting your countries, clicking 'submit' brings you to the eBURST launch page, as in the following screenshot:

The text indicates the colours that will be utilised within eBURST to indicate STs from your chosen comparison countries (Australia and New Zealand) and your initial country (Brazil), and those STs found in both comparison and initial countries as follows:

STs found only in your initial country will be coloured with BLACK halos

STs found both in you initial country and the comparison country(ies) will be coloured with PINK halos

STs found only in your comparison country(ies) will be coloured with GREEN halos

You then 'Click here to launch eBURST' which will bring up the eBURST app pre-loaded with the data from Brazil and Australia or New Zealand. The following screenshot shows a population snapshot derived from these data.

The eBURST population snapshot indicates the eBURST groups with the STs coloured as indicated above, with the abundance of STs represented by the size of the circles. For clarity, the numbering of the STs has been deselected using the option in the 'Diagram' dropdown menu of the eBURST app.

With our example, STs coloured with GREEN halos are from either Australia or New Zealand, STs coloured with a PINK halo are from both Brazil and Australia or New Zealand, and those with BLACK halos are only from Brazil. The blue and yellow circles are STs that are predicted to be eBURST group founders and sub-founders and, for increased clarity, these colours can be set to black, again using the 'Diagram' dropdown menu.

In the next section we show how to use trees to compare the STs from the country you have chosen with those from another country(ies).
